James Monroe
Published in Unknown Binding by Chelsea House ()
Author: Charles Wetzel
Average review score:

A political biography of James Monroe for young adults
The celebrated painting of "Washington Crossing the Deleware" shows two future presidents. In addition to the prominently displayed Father of Our Country, the young officer clutching the American flag is James Monroe. There is an element of irony in this painting since the two most famous foreign policy propositions in American history were established by these two men: Washington's admonition that the United States should get involved in no foreign entanglements and the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that every nation "is exclusively the judge of the Government best suited to itself" and that no other nation could interfere with that self-determination. Consequently, young readers will find in Charles Wetzel's biography of "James Monroe" for the World Leaders: Past & Present series an understanding of the Monroe Doctrine that goes well beyond the simple idea that European powers need to stay out of the Western Hemisphere to something more fundamental (and which is clearly embodied in the War for Iraqi Freedom).

This volume tells how Monroe was born into a distinguished Virginia family who left the College of William and Mary to enlist in the Continental Army and serve under Washington. Wounded at the Battle of Trenton after the crossing of the Deleware, Monroe ended the war as a major. A disciple of Thomas Jefferson, Monroe's political career led him to become governor of Virginia and during the Jefferson administration served as ambassador to France, Spain and England. Because of his diplomatic service Monroe was appointed Secretary of State by President James Madison. However, it was as Secretary of War during the War of 1812 that Monroe became a national hero (in contemporary terms, this would mean he went from Colin Powell to Donald Rumsfeld, thereby becoming one of the few men to be a memorable Secretary of War). Elected to the Presidency in 1816, Monroe served two terms in what is now known as the Era of Good Feelings.

This is an informative biography aimed at an older school audience and its major strength is that it focuses more on the political aspects of Monroe's public life than on standard biographical details. The volume is illustrated with historic paintings, etchings, and drawings, including several editorial cartoons that are intriguing looks at the political times in which Monroe lived. The World Leaders: Past & Present series consists of 157 biographies written especially for young adults to introduce them to men and women whose ideas and actions have determined the course of history. This includes world leaders from John Adams to Zhou Enlai, going back to Pericles and up to Ronald Reagan. All the volumes include a prologue "On Leadership" by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.

Lewis Wetzel,Indian Fighter: The Life and Times of a Frontie
It's been over thity years since I've read this. As a child it was spell binding. Full of suspense and intrigue, I could'nt put the book down until it was finished! As it was, it required a written letter and several phone calls from our hometown librarian to demand the return of this publication back to the library!
As it turned out,a Lady in the vicinity,(who happened to be a direct descendant of Lewis Wetzel) refused to hand over the book. There was only one copy of this publiction
in our library. So I to wait like, almost an eternity to read this book!

Mrs. Papadakis and Aspasia: Two Novels
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (April, 2002)
Author: Florence F. Wetzel

Find out what happens when you leave it all behind.
What if you went on vacation to a remote area, read Thoreau's Walden, and decided to leave "the system" and get in touch with the "earth's rhythm as calm and natural as a heartbeat". Carolyn does that and moves to Greece. You can experience it too, without leaving it all behind, in Mrs. Papadakis. Aspasia is suspenseful, without the relentless pace of some suspense novels, this novel is more thought provoking. Both are good reads.

Perry Robinson: The Traveler
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (March, 2002)
Authors: Florence F. Wetzel and Perry Robinson

A softly, unusually free ,cat
When I found this book, I nearly flipped out. Why? Well, Perry and I were stationed together at the Naval School of Music in 1963. I had the opportunity to slightly get to know him.
Reading this book was an adventure into my memories as well as Perry's. His words came naturally making this life trip on paper very cool, sometimes sad, often comical, and searingly truthful. As the cliche goes, I couldn't put the book down and find my self, even after finishing it, going back for seconds.
Wonderful reading about a master musician who prefers his shadows.

Thorough!
This book is a great place to learn the basics of Gallium Nitride and related semiconductors. I have been looking around for awhile for such a book and I thought I would never find such a book! Until now! Being in the academic field, it can be difficult to find such specialized books that cover highly specialized topics such as Gallium Nitride. If you have a basic semiconductors and devices background, you will definitely learn a lot from this book.

The Christmas Box

A Beloved Classic For All Seasons
I had enjoyed the tv movie of this with Richard Thomas and Maureen O'Hara, but never liking to read a book once I've seen the movie, I avoided picking this one up. Surprisingly, I won it while playing 'Dirty Santa' at a neighborhood party and felt compelled to read it. What a treat! This is one of the most heartwarming stories and probably the best by the wonderful Richard Paul Evans. Readers will be enchanted by the story of the young father who with his wife and daughter take up residence with an elderly lady in order to make ends meet. Instead of mere companions and housekeepers to the woman, they become dear and trusted friends. They, like the reader, are mystified by her past and want to know more about the Christmas box in the attic and the secret of the letters it holds.

This book answers the profound question, 'What is the first gift of Christmas.' As every parent knows, it is a parent's love for a child and without being overly sappy on the religion angle, this book beautifully illustrates God's love for His children in sending His Son.

Speaking directly to parents who have lost children, this book will appeal to everyone who believes in Christmas and the importance of cherishing family. For an uplifting renewal of your committment to yourself and to your family, read this book.

Not just fir Christmas
This is a beautiful little story that is just the right length to read in a single sitting. That is what I did, and then I went back and read it again. The message of the story is two-fold. First, to remind us that the first Christmas gift ever given was not wrapped up and placed underneath a tree, it had nothing to do with St. Nicholas, but it was placed in a box. That gift was the Son of God that He gave to us because he loved us so much. God knew what was going to happen to his son, but he gave him to us anyway so that we would be saved from the devil. The second lesson was learned by the father in this story - to spend less time at the office and more with his family.

There were times when I had to wipe away the tears while reading this book. It really is very touching to see how an old woman adopts the family she has hired to take care of her aging mansion. In return, they grow quite fond of her and share many things with her. She shares her Christmas Box however and reminds the family what the true meaning of Christmas is.

Why 5 stars?:
A very touching tale to remind everyone what the true meaning of Christmas: because God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that all who believe in him may not perish, but have eternal life. The tale is just the right length - easily read in one or two sittings. The lessons apply to all seasons and this book should be read all year round, not just at Christmas time.

If you ever forget what life is truly for....
Two years ago, in the middle of July, I went to the library with my daughter. She wanted to pick out a few books as she had just learned to read and I wanted to promote her eagerness. Whilst she was looking, I wondered to myself and thought, "Gee, when was the last time I read something good?".

Looking thru the vast number of books on the best sellers list, The Christmas Box, in it's beautiful covering, caught my eye. "How silly, I thought - reading a Christmas book int he middle of July!!" But, I got it anyway and that night, never put it down til I was finished, wet cheeks and all. The very next day I went back and got both "Time Piece, The Letter" and read them through as well. What a wonderful experience and journey.... Richard Paul Evans has done a remarkable series.... and if you do want to have "a good Read", and want to escape into the twists and turns of the lives entangled in his story, take the time, you will enjoy every minute. And when you are finished, you can also read "The Locket", a new series he has started, and hopefully will unravel a few more titles... Thanks Richard! :)

Childrens' Books- The Ugly Duckling
I just wanted to let everyone know that this CHILDREN'S book just won a Caldecott honor. As I scrolled down to read the reviews, I was shocked to hear of romance, mystery, etc. Then I realized that the reviews were intended for a different book entitled "The Ugly Duckling." I don't know why it happened, but don't let the reviews fool you! The new version of Hans Christian Anderson's The Ugly Duckling, illustrated by Jerry Pinkney is excellent and worthy of being a new Caldecott honor book!

Beautiful illustrations and a well-told story: buy this!
Like most parents, you want your child's home library to include standard fairy tales. Jerry Pinkney's "The Ugly Duckling" combines incredibly detailed ilustrations with a nice balance of both strong and muted colors AND a wonderful re-telling of the generations-old standard tale. In this verson, however, people are woven into the story in a way that I haven't seen before, and I like that very much. It's easy to see why this book was selected as a 1999 Caldecott Honor Book. Pinkney's a very gifted illustrator, and he really has to be given credit for his well-constructed text as well as the gorgeous pictures. Authors who write and then illustrate their own stories are somewhat rare, and as an adult, I appreciate the incredible mix of talent and hard work this represents. My children, of course, just love the pictures; they'll grow to appreciate good writing as they get older.

Ms. Elliott's Class Book Review
Our class liked it when the ugly duckling turned into a swan. Everyone learned that it doesn't matter if you don't look like everyone else. You should like who you are. We learned about the differences between swans and ducks. Our class learned that when you are young you have to learn about a lot of different things. We think that kids could learn about different things from reading this story such as animals, other stories to read, and feelings.
